Zestee Social Media School – Week 03 – Twitter

Welcome!  This is week 3 of the 12 week free social media course online.

If you’ve been with us all along, great…hope it’s been helpful so far and love to hear your comments.  If you’re new here, you might like to catch up on previous posts/lessons here (though this is a super flexible course and each week can be treated as a stand alone lesson).

It’s really taken me a while to warm to Twitter.  All those @@@@ and #### and truncated posts confuse me.  I’m also someone who isn’t short on words, so with its limit of 140 characters it seems to go against my natural style!

However I have been gradually convinced of the value of Twitter through various avenues.

Firstly, simply by the fact it really seems to be holding its own in the social media landscape.  Look at most websites and marketing material and there is the twitter symbol. You can’t avoid Facebook, Twitter and YouTube (and more recently Google +) in daily life, so at the very least, I feel I should take some time to better understand the potential of all of these so I can make a more informed decision.

Secondly, I’ve heard several success stories from friends and other social media specialists.  When summarised, these essentially come down to the fact that Twitter offers a whole new audience that you will not be able to access as easily via Facebook – for example the media and even celebrities.

Thirdly, the way the media seem to rely on Twitter during emergencies and other news worthy events.  It delivers relevant, short, sharp updates from people who are there.  Facebook can do this too but it is starting to seem to me that Twitter might do this better.

Finally, I personally am looking for “new social media ground”.  I have spent a LOT of time on Facebook in the last year or so think it’s great.  However I feel that I’m at the point where taking the time to learn to use Twitter more effectively both personally and for my business is a smart step in my social media strategy.

So here is this week’s lesson.  I’ll be learning along with you and am pleased to have the guidance of Kelly from Be A Fun Mum who has recently become my “Twitter Tutor”.  (She gave myself and Ngaire from BrisbaneKids.com.au a crash course in a cafe recently!).  You can find the 3 of us on Twitter here: @reneeveldman, @BeAFunMum and @brisbanekids.

If you’re in North Brisbane and would like to learn more about Twitter (or Blogging, Kelly’s other area of expertise), check out www.facebook.com/zesteeconcepts and click on Events or email renee@zestee.com.au for more information.  We have some face-to-face classes coming up soon and  be great to have you take part!

Pop on over to the Facebook page now to contribute to the conversation then join us on Twitter #ZesteeSMS (Zestee Social Media School).

Love to hear your thoughts and experiences with Twitter!

Next week, Tuesday 28th February at 8pm Brisbane time, it’s time to discuss websites & blogs so put this in your diary and hope to see you then!
